Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide anxiolytic developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Russia, derived from the endogenous immune peptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with an additional Pro-Gly-Pro sequence to improve metabolic stability. It is studied for its anxiolytic effects, which appear to involve modulation of GABAergic transmission, enkephalin metabolism, and serotonin turnover. Unlike benzodiazepines, Selank does not cause sedation or dependence in research models. It has also been examined for immunomodulatory properties and cognitive-enhancing effects, including improvements in memory consolidation and learning in preclinical studies.
